I. CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL
Meeting called to order by Vice Chair Dreggors at 3:30 p.m. with Steve Gosney and Ken Smith not in attendance.

II. PROJECT SCHEDULE AND BUDGET
Nancy Maddox announced that the budget for this project is $60,000 but said that some portion needs to be withheld for restoration of the existing murals. Fred Schwenck advised that the schedule currently calls for the project to be completed mid-2005. With this schedule in mind, Nancy recommends that we strive for a Call to Artist in December 2004 with responses due back in February 2005. Awards or commissions should be made by April with all work ready for installation by the time the facility is reopened in the July timeframe.

Fred Schwenck provided an overview of the planned usage for the building and identified where public art could be used. There is plenty of space available for all sizes of work although in some cases lighting may be problem. There is good natural light, but if additional lighting is required there is no convenient way to provide it in some places. There are a number of enclosed cases available which are being refinished. Nancy Maddox expressed an interest in using some of these to house some 3-D art since we seldom have good opportunities for 3-D art in APP projects. Fred Schwenck pointed out that these cases would also be good for display of historical artifacts relating to the courthouse history.

III. DISCUSSION ON THEME AND QUANTITY OF ART NEEDED
There was a great deal of discussion about the type of art that would be appropriate for this building with many constructive suggestions, but until the committee actually takes a look at the facility to see the available space , it was determined that it is premature to try and establish any quantities. It was the group’s opinion that although artwork can be contemporary, it needs to be representational and compatible with an historic theme. Some of the general ideas discussed were:

  • Additional historic murals
  • Collection of Florida themed art by single artist (Jackson Walker e.g.)
  • Photography (with particular emphasis on historical sites)
  • 3-D art for display cabinets
  • Diorama w/historical artifacts
  • Commissioned works by multiple artists for period works

IV. NEXT STEPS AND MEETING SCHEDULE
Everyone agreed that the next meeting should be held in the Courthouse, preferably when Ken Smith, the project architect, can be in attendance. Afternoon meetings seemed to be preferred by a majority of the members.

Staff will invite Jennifer Coolidge of the DeLand Museum to the next meeting to discuss the Jackson Walker collection opportunity. Mike Fincher will bring a piece of Walker’s work for the Committee to see.

Tentative date for the next meeting is Wednesday, November 10, 2004. Staff will confirm this date with Mr. Smith and advise the committee. A regular meeting schedule will be decided at the next meeting.

V. ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, the meeting was declared adjourned by Vice Chair Dreggors at 4:45 p.m.
